Top Travel Tips: Newborn Edition

While travel (and life) are certainly looking a little different than usual for this time of year (thanks 2020) we are still looking forward to the holiday season and spending time with close friends and family.

This is my first year celebrating Christmas with a baby of my own, and i can't wait to share holiday traditions with Mia and create new ones as a family of 3. One of my favorite traditions is spending Christmas Eve with my parents at their house with my brothers. We are so glad we have kept them in our quarantine bubble this year so we can continue to feel safe being near them during this holiday season.

Going to their house used to just be as simple as packing a bag and jumping in the car, but now that we have Mia it’s a little bit more of a process to prepare for overnight adventures. We’ve made the trip to my parents house a few times since she was born, and I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it. Here are a couple of things that have helped make the overnight trips a bit easier:

  1. Pack functional, multipurpose things to make life easier. We have the Lulyboo Bassinet To-Go Bubble which is SUPER lightweight and portable (you literally fold it and can wear it like a backpack. This lifesaver can function as her crib, changing station, and playpen all in one so it PERFECT for overnight trips or really anytime we have to take Mia somewhere other than home for more than a few hours.

  2. Keep her on her schedule. We are flexible, but still try to keep her on her typical eat, play, sleep schedule with her bath time and bedtime as close to her normal routine as possible. When she stays on schedule she sleeps better… which means we sleep better ;) Every family and every baby is different, so just try to keep your typical everyday routine as close to “normal” for baby as possible.

  3. At least one of her naps swaddled in her bassinet in a quiet room. This one can be tricky when you’re away from home but I promise it is so worth it when it comes to sleep quality!

  4. Extra PJ’s + outfits… for us AND the baby. If overpacking for myself wasn't an issue before, it’s actually a necessity now (yay). You just never know when you're going to be spit up on… or worse.

  5. Save any plastic grocery bags you may have and throw a few in your diaper bag in case you need to throw dirty clothes or diapers in them while you’re on the road. Recycling + being functional all in one!
