The Chosen - The Next Series You Have to Watch!
In our new reality of “work from home”, Wifi, and streaming anything from anywhere, it is acceptable to kickback on the couch and binge watch a television series in an afternoon. “Netflix and chill’ is common terminology, and it’s completely normal to hear your friends and coworkers talk about their latest “binge” that they can’t get enough of.
Thanks to the pandemic, I’ve made my way through several noteworthy television series in the last year, but I think I’ve stumbled upon the best one so far. It’s the one that took me the most by surprise.
Ya heard it here first - It’s time to add The Chosen, which is the first multi season television show about the life of Christ, to your list of “must watch next” television series.

What Is The Chosen?
This show displays a fresh look at Jesus's life and truly caters to a more contemporary audience. The acting and writing is phenomenal and transports you right back to biblical times in a comprehensible and entertaining way.
Growing up in a catholic household, I’ve seen my fair share of Christian movies and television shows - and I’ll be honest, I usually find them a little corny and underwhelming. With the exception of Veggie Tales in elementary school, (I loved me some Veggie Tales) I had not discovered a Christian series or movie worth sharing with my friends.
Director Dallas Jenkins is transforming the way Christian television is viewed, and The Chosen is a series I think everyone can enjoy and appreciate.
Whether you are a believer or not, there’s something to be taken away and learned from this series.
After the first episode I found myself truly looking forward to watching more. it was incredibly well done and hooked me right in.
You Need to Watch The Chosen Too
When I first started season one, all I knew was that it was about the life of Jesus, and yes, I wanted to watch it, but I’ll be honest, I wasn’t necessarily excited to press play the first time. I have a long list of shows I want to start, and because I haven’t had the best luck with Christian television, I was a little resistant to begin this one, but I am incredibly grateful I did.
If you’re debating starting it, or you just added it to your list, bump it up to the top, everything else can wait. This one is worth it.
I grew up going to church every Sunday and am very familiar with the stories of the Bible, but in my head they still seemed so distant and unrelatable. Watching the first season of The Chosen has already brought life and understanding to the New Testament in a way that I was not expecting.
I find myself relating with the everyday struggles of each character, and even laughing along to some of the light hearted humor sprinkled in at the perfect moments.
Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, does an incredible job. He brings together the perfect combination of humility, authority, and relatability. And Jesus is FUNNY. I love the jovial sense of his character.
Other Things I Love About The Chosen Series
In season one, we witness some of Jesus’s first miracles and the beginning of His ministry to change the world. We are introduced to several familiar characters of the Bible and are able to see how He saw them and reached out to each one of them.
My favorite episode so far is the story of the wedding, when Jesus turns water into wine. I have always loved this story and I think director, Dallas Jenkins, did a phenomenal job bringing it to life.
This show and the way it is being filmed and funded is truly revolutionary. The Chosen is produced by the people and is the largest crowdfunded media project of all time. They have an option to “pay it forward” so you can ensure everyone can continue to watch for free.
Seasons 1 and 2 have been fully funded, and season 3 is set to begin filming in the fall of 2021. They plan to film 7 seasons total, and you can learn more about how to be a part of that here.
Season two just premiered and I never thought any words like this would come out of my mouth… but I am so ready to binge watch some more Jesus.
New episodes will be released as they are edited, so download the app here, catch up, and watch with me!
I have found that the past year has truly helped me identify how important my faith really is, how strong it can be when I’m intentional, and how weak it can be when I’m not. I never imagined a television series to be the spark to a deeper connection in my faith, but The Chosen brought a fresh breath of air into my spiritual life.
If that’s something you’ve been lacking too, give this a shot. I hope it initiates a deeper faith connection for you too.
